Read the transcript

[Dark room. Yancy Medeiros, in a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles T-shirt, looks into the camera.]

Yancy: "Martial arts is my longest relationship."

[Old footage of a children's martial arts class.]

Yancy: "Toughness that came at a young age, man."

[Yancy, seen from behind, stands before a museum display of Polynesian voyaging canoes.]

Yancy: "Toughness is all you got."

[He stands between rusted fences at the edge of the ocean.]

Yancy: "You're usually alone, though."

[In dim light, Yancy holds his young daughter.]

Yancy: "You can't put time into the past."

Yancy: "Put it now. Put it in here now."

[Music. He sits alone on a grassy point facing the ocean, shadowboxes on the grass by the shore, then sits on a rock beside a stone pillar under storm clouds. Night falls on a backyard interview lit by a softbox. By candlelight, Yancy and his daughter sit over a birthday cake with family.]

How it was made

Riza's mood board for Yancy: tone words (legacy, purpose, roots, sacrifice; not a highlight reel or a retirement story) and visual references from Blade Runner 2049 for cinematic shots and MasterClass for interview lighting

Development

  • Pitched the film to Yancy and shaped the concept with him
  • Three-act structure: background, conflict, then family and legacy
  • Mood board: wide frames, silhouette lighting, negative space
  • Researched his career and mapped its turning points to shape the story
Yancy Medeiros seated on a grassy point facing the ocean on Oʻahu

Pre-production

  • Wrote the interview questions, organized by act
  • Scouted Oʻahu with Yancy: Aiea, Mākaha, West Oʻahu, his childhood home
  • Built and tested the rig: Sony a7R IV, Atomos Shinobi II, V-mount power
  • Planned the shoot around his family's schedule
Behind the scenes: an Atomos monitor on the camera rig shows Yancy framed for the backyard interview, with a softbox in the background at dusk

Production

  • Crew of one on interview day: camera, lighting, sound, and interviewing
  • Directed family scenes with Yancy and his daughter
  • Planned the drone and fog shots
Edit map of the Yancy trailer: 11 shots on the video track, the audio waveform underneath, and six caption cues, ending on the title card

Generated from the final trailer: real cuts, waveform, and captions.

Post

  • Transcribed and indexed 18 recordings to their source timestamps
  • Pulled the story quotes on identity, sacrifice, fatherhood, and legacy
  • Cut, color graded, and mixed the trailer

The call

Night falls on the backyard interview; a softbox and LED light Yancy in his chair

As daylight faded during an 8 to 10 hour interview day, I moved the darker chapter of his story into the dusk instead of relighting.
